Project Acacia reinforces industry viewpoints that stablecoins and tokenisation play an essential role in Australian financial markets

AUDD is proud to have been a key partner in Project Acacia. The final report clearly reinforces what the industry has long recognised, that stablecoins and other forms of tokenised money will play an essential role in enabling more efficient and scalable financial markets in Australia.
The final report builds on AUDD’s earlier participation in the 2023 RBA–DFCRC CBDC Pilot, where AUDC explored a charitable donation use case utilising the AUDD stablecoin with CBDC as the backing settlement asset, demonstrating the potential for instant settlement and programmable transaction flows in real-world applications.
As Project Acacia demonstrates, stablecoins are already being explored alongside central bank money and tokenised bank deposits as core settlement assets in wholesale and institutional markets. This reflects a broader shift, where digital money is increasingly being incorporated into traditional financial infrastructure to support faster, more automated and lower-risk transactions.
The findings highlight the urgency of moving from experimentation to implementation. There is strong industry momentum, but realising the benefits of tokenised finance will require coordinated action across government, regulators and the private sector. Clearer regulatory frameworks, improved interoperability and sustained public-private collaboration will be critical to unlocking investment and scaling these innovations.
Federal Parliament and government bodies like the RBA must continue to provide the regulatory frameworks needed to support the ongoing growth of the stablecoin industry. As the industry evolves and expands, so too must these frameworks.
Australia has a genuine opportunity to position itself as a global leader in tokenised finance. The priority now is to act quickly, build on this momentum and create the conditions for stablecoins and tokenised markets to scale.
